From Fedora to Ubuntu in 4 weeks
So my time with Fedora didn't last that long. Yesterday I decided to wipe my operating system once again and install Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty). Luckily I had only been using the Fedora installation for some 4 weeks, so I didn't have that much data to take care of.
What was so wrong with Fedora? Nothing really, I liked it a lot and was very comfortable with it (especially after getting a stable Chromium x86_64 version). Unfortunately once the N900 specs were released I checked up the Maemo 5 SDK and development environment stuff, and to my horror saw that support and ready-to-install packages are given for Ubuntu only. Since I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the N900, and possibly doing some software development for the Maemo platform, it didn't seem like a good idea to stay with Fedora.
Pity. But hey, Ubuntu installed nicely (although I had to do it twice due to mistakenly thinking it would automatically erase the Fedora partition, which it didn't. It never really even mentioned another Linux installation...). Seems pretty solid so far, has some nifty desktop effects and all the same software installs nicely as on Fedora.
It's funny, I only spent some 4 weeks with Fedora and more than once ran into the fact that it really does seem to be the "other" Linux distro, due to Ubuntu seemingly getting first in on many things. It feels a shame since the Fedora community is doing such good work with it, but on the other hand I do think Linux needs a "flagship". Something that is polished so well that it draws converts from Windows and Mac users. Ubuntu certainly could take the lead.
