Basshero.org 3.0 is live!
Hello, we're back. After a week or two of maintenance, I've finished upgrading the site to the new version of The Argonaut. In the history of this site, this is the 3rd version.
The first site version was setup around 2004 to offer information about our organization Bass Heroes, which at the time was beginning to organize breakbeat related events and radio shows. The site was basically just a collection of static pages. Even the RSS xml was edited by hand. Over the years I slowly built some PHP functionality for writing posts and comments.
A new version went live March 23rd 2009. By this time The Argonaut was beginning to take shape as the site engine. More features were gradually added, for example sharing, authentication, tags, and some other basic blogging engine features. The idea from the start was to learn web design by creating everything from scratch. Over time I realized that progress was happening too slow and decided to plan the next version.
During the early summer of 2010 I found Pylons, the Python web framework. I was immediately fascinated and quickly realized this was the framework I would build the new site version with. This time I would use established components to build up an engine that would be easy to setup and use. Work was progressing nicely, until the birth of our baby girl Lilia at the end of August slowed things down (in a positive way, she's gorgeous!). A short break and then some more work, and now I feel The Argonaut is ready for its first release. So here you are, Basshero 3.0, running The Argonaut version 0.2.0.
I will be releasing the code and uploading the project at the Python Package Index in a few days once I fix a few bugs and annoyances. Basically The Argonaut is built upon Pylons, which is an excellent web framework for Python. In addition to Pylons, The Argonaut uses the following additional components;
- Mako (templates, the View)
- SQLAlchemy (the Model)
- repoze.what (authentication and access rights)
- CKEditor (for writing posts)
- AddToAny (for sharing)
- jQuery (for additional magic)
- Simple3color (theme)
So, please, if you have any comments, positive or negative, or just want to say hi or something about The Argonaut, please feel free to leave a comment. I will be adding more features and slowly developing The Argonaut further, so if you are interested please check back again or subscribe to the RSS feed.
