Nokia 5800 XpressMusic like media bar for the N900
One of the best things about the Nokia 5800 was the extremely well working media pop up bar that appeared when you covered the proximity sensor with your finger. It allows launching of well used programs like the web browser and music player. Now the superstar of the Maemo community, Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh has made the same pop up media bar for the Nokia N900.
MediaBar is configurable. You can set the time in milliseconds that the proximity sensor needs to be covered for the bar to pop up. You can also control whether it will disappear automatically, and how long until it will disappear. The bar features the following launchers with their standard icons: Media player, Photos, Email application, Conversations and the microB browser. A long press on the Media player icon will bring up media controls which is a nice little feature.
The bar looks to work from all applications I tried it on, which is nice as there is no need to go back to the home screen to launch apps. Also, it fits onto the screen nicely in portraid mode apps. I am not aware of a possibility to change the launchers, but if none exists, I am sure it will be added in coming versions.
The application is new so it is still in extras-devel. Install on your own risk, though I really do recommend this one.
